Collecting NZ glass


I began collecting New Zealand glass after I relocated to Auckland from Dunedin in 1979. There was no art glass being made in Dunedin then, so seeing art glass made in New Zealand was a real thrill. I still have all eight of the ruby stemmed wine glasses made by Garry Nash that I bought in John Abbott's shop 'The Kiln' in Parnell Rd in 1980.

Keith Mahy - one of the pioneers

Photo: Stephen Robinson I have been saddened to learn of the death in Whangarei of Keith Mahy, on Friday 14 June 2013. Keith was the first New Zealand born studio glass artist (I think only English Reg Kempton and American Tony Kuepfer predate him in New Zealand ). But Keith's involvement with glass began well before he set up his studio in that former cow shed at Otonga, between Hikurangi and Whakapara in Northland in 1976.   Keith was born in Whakatane in 1947 and studied sculpture and design at the Elam School of Fine Arts at Auckland University, graduating with a Diploma in Fine Arts in 1969. He won the New Zealand Manufacturers Association Student Design award in 1967, and on completing his studies worked in packaging design in Auckland. In 1970 he was appointed Design Director at Crown Crystal Glass in Christchurch. An Honour

Each year the Trust Board of the Auckland War Memorial Museum recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to museums in Aotearoa New Zealand. I was one of four recipients recognised in 2017. I was delighted recently to attend a reception at the Museum to receive the award of Fellow of the Auckland War Memorial Museum. The medal was presented by Dr William Randall, Chairman of the Museum Trust Board, and Dr David Gaimster, the current Director of the Auckland War Memorial Museum. I was the Museum's Director from 1979 until 1993, which was the reason for the award. That's great, Stuart, I am sure I can hear you say, but this is a New Zealand Glass Blog, not a place to show off awards, and that Medal is not glass. You are r ight, of course, it's not glass, but there is a significant glass connection. Rob Hooper was an early NZ Glass Artist

Rob Hooper was working as a technician for the Govett Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth in 1973 when he met Tony Kuepfer, who had recently arrived from the US. Over the next year Rob assisted Tony in the building of Tony's concrete block glass studio next to the church in Inglewood, which opened in 1974. Rob spent a year blowing glass with Tony, then went travelling and visiting glass studios in Europe. When he returned in 1976, Rob worked with Tony and John Parkin at Inglewood for a few months, then set up his own studio in the Waikato - John Parkin came to work there too for a period. In 1980, Rob Hooper moved to Henderson in Auckland and established a studio there. He entered pieces in the 1984 and 1985 Philips Studio Glass Award exhibitions at Auckland Museum. I have not seen any glas s signed by Rob Hooper, so all the pieces in my collection have been attributed to him, sometimes with confirmation by Rob himself.
