Looking for Emma Camden Glass Charms - do you know where these are?




 
In June 2007, I purchased this piece from Emma Camden’s exhibition ...something remaining... at Avid gallery in Wellington. ‘Fading memory’ is cast in pale yellow translucent glass. It represents a charm bracelet trinket in the form of a revolving double sided mirror. Cast into the glass ‘mirror’ face are the words ‘Fading’ on one side and ‘memory’ on the other, so that the words show through to combine as ‘Fading memory’. It is 14cm wide and 16cm long, with the ‘mirror’ being 10cm in diameter.

The exhibition at Avid included several of these bracelet ‘charms’ in glass, which I understand were pieces based on a charm bracelet that belonged to Emma's mother. Emma is preparing for a retrospective exhibition (that'll be something to look forward to!), and she'd like to locate the other pieces from the Avid exhibition. Lynette Campbell Glass Art Retrospective

Lynette Campbell died in 2005, cutting all too short a life devoted to making glass. I blogged last year about the enjoyment I get from the pieces of hers I have. Now there's to be a retrospective exhibition of work she left behind, which will provide an opportunity for others to acquire and enjoy Lyn's glass art. Burning Issues is the gallery in Whangārei where Lynette was blowing again just before her death. It was set up by Keith Mahy, who taught Lyn glass blowing at Northland Polytech, beginning in 1989. So it's a really appropriate gallery to host such an exhibition. There's a preview at 5pm on Friday 26 September, and the exhibition runs from then until October 23rd. If you can be anywhere near Whangārei during that period, do go and have a look at this exhibition - it promises to be fabulous. Burning Issues is in the Harbour Basin complex in Whangārei, down by the river.

Early Glass by Peter Viesnik

Recently a piece was offered on TradeMe that seemed on first indications to be one of the first pieces of glass made by Peter Viesnik at Albany in 1978.  Discussion with Peter, and his inspection of the piece indicated that it was not an Albany piece, but was probably made by him about 1982, in the second year of his working with Peter Raos at the Hot Glass Company at Devonport. There, unlike Albany, the glass was batched but at that early stage they were batching one colour at a time, like this blue, rather than clear. The pattern on each face is the chill mark from the marver, used to slightly 'square' the round form.
